Rand Paul Officially Announces U.S. Senate Bid

It's official: Kentucky Ophthalmologist Rand Paul, son of U.S. Congressman Ron Paul, has entered the Kentucky U.S. Senate race. He's now in it to win it.

As the Associated Press reports:

A Kentucky ophthalmologist who has been eyeing a U.S. Senate campaign says he will run for the seat now held by Jim Bunning.

Republican Rand Paul of Bowling Green ended months of speculation Wednesday when he told The Associated Press in an interview that he is entering the race. Paul told the AP of his decision in advance of a series of planned media events, including an appearance on national television Wednesday evening.

And I just received an announcement via e-mail from Rand Paul's exploratory election committee saying the following:

Fellow Citizens,

Rand Paul, Bowling Green Eye Surgeon and son of former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, today announces he is officially in the race for the US Senate representing Kentucky. Dr. Paul will now transition his exploratory committee to a full election committee.

Dr. Paul has been respectful of incumbent Senator Bunning's courage in opposing the bank bailout. Dr. Paul waited for Senator Bunning's difficult decision not to run for re-election before entering the race.

"I think the main thing that motivates me to run for office is the debt fueled by Washington's out of control spending. I think we're drowning in a sea of debt, as a country. The deficit this year will be 13% of the GNP. This is a historic high. The danger is going to be inflation within a year or two, and prices may rise rapidly."

Dr. Paul's commitment to fiscal responsibility is nothing new. For the past fifteen years, Dr. Paul has been the chairman of the Kentucky Taxpayers United, a group that monitors and rates the State Legislature on spending issues.

Rand Paul's entry into this race will nationalize the Kentucky US Senate campaign. This can be witnessed by his television and radio appearances scheduled in New York City on August 6th and 7th -- finally giving hope of representation to liberty-minded and fiscally conservative Kentuckians.

August 20th Rand Paul Money Bomb

Grassroots organizers who put together the multi-million dollar "money bombs" (single days of massive online donations from grassroots supporters) for Rand Paul's father Ron Paul, in his 2007 bid for the Republican nomination to run for U.S. President, have put together another money bomb website:, with the goal of raising $1,000,000 in one day this August 20th, significant because it is the birthday of Congressman Ron Paul. So far the site has tallied over 1,700 pledges of $100 each.
