Recently, teen sensation Miley Cyrus made worldwide news for a leaked homemade video catching her smoking out of a bong.
She claims that she was merely smoking salvia, a legal drug in her home state of California. Regardless, this past Saturday, the Early Show on CBS decided to devote an entire segment to this breaking news event. They went around the room, each taking turns scolding the girl, blaming her handlers and telling us all what's wrong with the world of "celebrity". You can imagine how brilliant these insights were.
Then it was time for a new segment. Possible Christmas gifts to give your friends, family and co-workers. Many of these gift ideas included bottles of alcohol, which led to several back-and-forth jokes about drinking too early in the morning. One male announcer claimed this was no problem for him.
(maniacal laughter ensued)
And I gawked at the television, wondering how they couldn't see the irony here. Perhaps these anchors are legitimately worried about the choices Cyrus would make when under the influence of drugs. But from the round-circle tirade, it seemed like the bad choice they were afraid of her making was the act itself. And yet, they themselves are not only mature enough to make their own drug decisions; they laugh about them.
