Illegal Immigrants Paid More Taxes Last Year Than General Electric

Here's a fun fact. Did you know that last year, illegal immigrants paid more taxes than multi-billion dollar conglomerate General Electric? That's right, the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy found that in 2010, undocumented immigrants paid an estimated $11.2 billion in taxes. General Electric-- which earned $14 billion last year-- paid nothing. It even got money from Washington (i.e. from you), all credits and subsidies considered.

Isn't that appalling? Look, if you think illegal immigrants aren't carrying their fair share of the burden, if you think they are soaking up goodies from the welfare state and glutting our social services-- we can have that debate...

But can we agree that the bigger drain on our national treasury is corporate welfare and giant multi-billion dollar handouts to the finance industry and other powerful lobbies with friends in Washington? Can we agree that the unearned transfer of wealth from hard-working middle class and poor Americans to wealthy companies is the bigger injustice and the greater threat to our fiscal solvency?

Here's your welfare queen-- her name is General Electric. She paid NO taxes in 2010 even though she made billions. You know who else paid taxes on his income for last year in addition to illegal immigrants? Me. I did this April. And it sucked. And it hurt. And it has discouraged the growth of my website by sapping up money that could be used for operating expenses that would keep growing it.

They took money from a guy that breaks his back shingling rooftops in the harsh August sun, they took money from a struggling 24 year old entrepreneur with a dream of building an alternative media empire that employs hundreds, and they gave that money to General Electric --which didn't need it and didn't earn it (if I like your damned products, GE, I'll buy them).

And then General Electric is going to take the money they had the thugs in Washington steal from my bank account... and give it to Obama's campaign for his reelection bid in 2012. They'll also plow it into operating costs for MSNBC, which will slander my values, my culture, and my principles.

Where is the justice in all of this? How is this really happening? I can hardly believe it. If you're mad about illegal immigrants, you had better damned well be mad at corporate America right now, and if I don't have your full agreement and hear your outraged voice added to the growing chorus of Americans who are finally waking up to the horror of creeping fascism in the country they love, then I don't want to hear anything out of your mouth about illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigrants didn't steal my money and use it against me. Corporations did.

Oh and PS, General Electric: 30 Rock is NOT FUNNY. It's not even mildly entertaining. I'd rather have teeth pulled than sit through a 30 Rock episode.
