Osama bin Laden Dead - The Man and his Motivations - And can we FINALLY declare victory and come home??

"Only government can fail for 10 years and spend trillions of [your] dollars over budget and still be cheered and celebrated after it finally accomplishes what it originally set out to do."
-Jeff Frazee, executive director of Young Americans for Liberty

10:58 PM Eastern: MSNBC has reported that terrorist Osama bin Laden is confirmed dead by the Department of Defense, and President Obama is going to make a late night announcement to that effect shortly. Watch MSNBC's live coverage here.

With most of the rest of Al Qaeda's senior leadership captured or killed, can we PLEASE declare victory now and bring ALL of our troops home from Afghanistan??

What was Osama bin Laden's motivation for 9-11?

Osama bin Laden on October 12, 1996:

The people of Islam have suffered from aggression, iniquity and injustice imposed by the Zionist-Crusader alliance and their collaborators. . . . It is the duty now of every tribe in the Arabian Peninsula to fight jihad and cleanse the land from these Crusader occupiers. Their wealth is booty to those who kill them. My Muslim brothers: your brothers in Palestine and in the land of the two Holy Places [i.e., Saudi Arabia] are calling upon your help and asking you to take part in fighting against the enemy—the Americans and the Israelis. They are asking you to do whatever you can to expel the enemies out of the sanctities of Islam.

Osama bin Laden in 1998:

. . . the killing of Americans and their civilian and military allies is a religious duty for each and every Muslim to be carried out in whichever country they are until Al Aksa mosque [in Jerusalem] has been liberated from their grasp and until their armies have left Muslim lands.

Osama bin Laden on December 22, 1998:

The International Islamic Jihad Front for the jihad against the U.S. and Israel has, by the grace of God, issued a crystal clear fatwa calling on the Islamic nation to carry on Jihad aimed at liberating the holy sites. The nation of Mohammed has responded to this appeal. If instigation for jihad against the Jews and the Americans . . . is considered to be a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal. Our job is to instigate and, by the grace of God, we did that, and certain people responded to this instigation. . . . Any thief or criminal who enters another country to steal should expect to be exposed to murder at any time. . . .

Let's take bin Laden at his word-- which is quite clear and unequivocal-- he attacked America on 9-11 because of Washington's occupation of Muslim lands and strategic alliance with the secular state of Israel. Washington, you made America less safe with your foreign military adventurism, and then took TEN freaking years to find a man hiding in some caves. You suck at everything. Shame on you. You deserve no credit for "fixing" a problem you started in the first place... and I'm still paying $4.00 a gallon for gas.

EDIT- 11:12 PM Eastern: Wall Street Journal reports:

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is dead, and the U.S. has his body in its possession, a person familiar with the situation said Sunday.

President Barack Obama will make the announcement late Sunday at the White House.

The development capped a manhunt of more than a decade for the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that left 3,000 people dead and dramatically altered U.S. foreign policy and the nation's sense of security.

EDIT- 11:31 PM Eastern: ABCNews reports:

Osama bin Laden Killed; ID Confirmed by DNA Testing

Osama bin Laden, hunted as the mastermind behind the worst-ever terrorist attack on U.S. soil, has been killed, sources told ABC News.

Specific details of how and where the al Qaeda mastermind was killed were not immediately available, but sources said U.S. forces have the body and DNA testing confirmed that it was bin Laden.

A national security source said that bin Laden was not killed in a drone strike, but declined to go into details about the forces that killed him.

They have an in-depth piece. Read it all here.

11:42 PM Eastern- Osama bin Laden's strategy:

The Daily Caller says:

The Saudi-born bin Laden built his Al Qaeda organization in Afghanistan and Sudan during the 1990s. His strategy was to attack the United States until it ended support of Middle East dictators, including Hosni Mubarak and the Saudi royal family. By attacking the “Great Satan,” bin Laden hoped the dictators would later be deposed by jihadi uprisings and a new Muslim empire — the Caliphate — would be established to restore Muslim theocracy to the Arab lands.

Interesting, huh?

12:07 AM Eastern- The New York Times asks:

The death of Mr. Bin Laden is a defining moment in the American-led war on terrorism. What remains to be seen is whether the death of the leader of Al Qaeda galvanizes his followers by turning him into a martyr, or whether it serves as a turning of the page in the war in Afghanistan and gives further impetus to the Obama administration to bring American troops home.

12:23 AM Eastern- The Left Coast Rebel asks, Bin Laden Dead... PHOTO of Bin Laden's Body Forthcoming?

"Call it a sense of morbid curiosity...or a sense of righteous (and justified) indignation-driven curiosity, and the ultimate tell-tale proof that he is actually, truly dead: I want to see a photo Bin Laden's body. Will a photo be released by the US government? Highly likely, given that Bin Laden has been the most wanted man in American history."

12:47 AM Eastern- MSNBC is reporting that the White House was aware of this compound where bin Laden was hiding last August, and that it took all that time to confirm bin Laden was there.

12:48 AM Eastern- I'm hearing celebratory fireworks in the apartment complexes surrounding the Virginia Tech campus where I'm currently staying. I think I'm going to go for a walk and investigate.

1:20 AM Eastern- Typo! MSNBC correspondent accidentally reports "Obama killed" on Twitter.

1:23 AM Eastern- Rand Paul's statement on bin Laden death:

"I commend our troops, the intelligence community, and the military leaders involved in both the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama for their perseverance and courage in pursuit of this most grievous enemy of the United States of America."
