GOP budget plan aims to head off Pentagon cuts with social program savings

Not being a fan of social spending, I do believe that Americans need to be weaned off the entitlement state. However, the Republicans have embarked on a "War at all cost" strategy and are actually advocating for cutting social spending so they don't have to end the insane wars and reduce military spending. The budget ax needs to fall first on the bloated defense budget. Still, Republican budget cuts are pathetic. $300 billion over a decade is a puny $30 billion a year on a $3.8 trillion (and growing) annual federal budget. These are not cuts but merely a con to slow the rate of government growth.
The Republicans who control the House are using cuts to food aid, health care and social services like Meals on Wheels to protect the Pentagon from a wave of budget cuts come January. The reductions, while controversial, are but a fraction of what Republicans called for in the broader, nonbinding budget plan they passed in March. Totaling a little more than $300 billion over a decade, the new cuts are aimed less at tackling $1 trillion-plus government deficits and more at preventing cuts to troop levels and military modernization.
